World Music Day aims to promote music in two ways: Amateur and Professional musicians are encouraged to perform on the streets. The slogan used for this is “Make music” (“Faites de la Musique”). Lots of free concerts are organized, making all kinds of music accessible to the public.
Two essential things to be noted here are that all the concerts will be held free of cost and the artists will perform in these concerts free of charge. This international day’s most significant purpose is to make music accessible to people free of cost, thus encouraging them to learn and enjoy this art form.
When is World Music Day 2024?
The word music derived from the Greek word “Mousike” means “art of the Muses”. To celebrate this fantastic art form (Music) and its beautiful followers (Musicians), World Music Day is celebrated on 21st June annually worldwide. World Music Day is also called Fete de la Musique, Make Music Day or International Music Day.
Who Started World Music Day?
In the year 1981, the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived this idea. Since then, this day has been celebrated annually as a World Music Day in many countries worldwide.
Why World Music Day is celebrated on 21st June
On Jack Lang’s request, Maurice Fleuret became the Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture in October 1981. He applied his thoughts about music practice and its evolution. He called it out as “the music everywhere and the concert nowhere”. He studied the cultural habits of Five million French people in the year 1982.
He analyzed that one young person out of two played some musical instrument. He started to dream about bringing this talent of the people out on the streets. As a result of this, Fete de la Musique took place in Paris for the first time in 1982. Before all this happened, This idea was conceived by American musician Joel Cohen who worked for a French radio station in the year 1970’s.
Since the first music festival in 1982, it has become an international phenomenon celebrated on the same day in many counties worldwide. This music festival is celebrated in close to 700 cities in 120 countries worldwide. Some of the countries where this festival has found a great response are India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, The United States and the UK.
Importance of World Music Day
World Music Day or Fete de la Musique is to provide as many free concerts as possible throughout the day.
